A mighty sword arm anchored by holy purpose - a zealous warrior!
~ The Ancestor

The Crusader is one of the playable Characters in Darkest Dungeon. He is one of the 4 Religious characters.

Class Description[ | ]

Every cause needs a champion, a hero to rally otherwise common men to a righteous cause and lead them to victory. The Crusader is that champion. With holy blade in hand he smites the wicked and sends them back to the darkness from whence they crept. While his armor restricts his movement it affords him great protection, allowing him to stand in the frontlines to take the blows that his weaker comrades cannot.

No matter the pressures he faces he will remain strong, finding strength within himself to keep fighting on while inspiring others to do the same. Even in the midst of battle he can galvanize his allies, giving them the strength to fight off madness for a little longer. When the Crusader is leading the charge, all of hell will know to fear the flame.

Combat Skills[ | ]

Battle-hardened and stalwart, the Crusader has held the front lines in a hundred holy wars. He either attacks foes head-on with righteous fury, or embraces a melee support role by leveraging his powerful defensive buffs & off-heals.
~ Guild

Note: New Crusaders will always come with the Smite skill.

Camping Skills[ | ]

Righteousness and conviction inspire compelling speeches around the campfire! In the face of mounting stress, the Crusader is a leader, standing tall and refusing to break. His unshakable belief can assuage companions' fear, reassuring them that despite the hardships they will most certainly endure, all will be well in the end.
~ Survivalist

Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.

At camp the Crusader focuses on keeping his party's stress levels in check. All his skills involve reducing and resisting stress of himself or his party. He can also pray for The Light to keep them safe during the night.

Tactical Analysis[ | ]

Playstyles[ | ]

The Crusader is a versatile well-rounded Hero, that can operate in any rank or team composition. He can provide stress heals, stun, and utility. He can sit in the frontlines with Smite, Stunning Blow and Inspiring Cry to control frontline enemies and help with recovery. Holy Lance has good Crit and allows targeting to back ranks if he gets moved, Battle Heal is nice as well, especially if you don't have a good source of healing on the team, alternatively bringing a high-speed stunner negates DMG and stress. Bulwark of Faith rarely does a lot, since it's usually better to try and Stun an enemy or work on killing one. The Prot buff is nice for bossfights with enemies that can't be stunned though. Zealous Accusation is on the weaker side of his abilities; it does good damage for a cleave, but is still less efficient than simply hitting an enemy with Smite. It's also a Ranged skill, making it not get Melee Trinket stats which all his other moves get.

Conversely, a backline Crusader can be just as effective, if not even more. Holy Lance is an amazing skill. In terms of stats, it's like an Iron Swan from the Hellion with better targeting, better crit and extra damage against Unholy. He can still use both his healing skills, allowing him to still provide on that front. His last move is usually up to preference between Stunning Blow and Smite, with Stunning Blow providing utility and control when the Crusader gets moved and Smite being able to hit Rank 1 or 2 for huge damage. He is still very slow however, needing a Stun into the backline to be able to kill enemies before they can act. The Plague Doctor especially is a good choice to pair with him, since she can Stun both enemy backliners, allowing Holy Lance to devastate an enemy before they can act. Plague Grenade can also help clear up any enemy with few HP left.

What makes the Crusader unique?[ | ]

He's a jack of all trades. He can fit in into any team in any position and excel to offer support the team. Need an off-healer? Need some Damage? Need stress healing? The Crusader can fulfill most if not all roles or challenges. Having a few Crusaders in the roster can help relieve some stress of team building, since you can build a three-man team and safety pick a Crusader, since he has an answer to almost every problem. The only thing he might need is being able to move forward with Holy Lance without messing up the teams positioning. Furthermore, he has the most consistent Heal in the game. Both Inspiring Cry and Battle Heal heal a set number instantly from anywhere, which makes him the best option for getting someone off of Death’s Door. Stats-wise, he has the 3rd highest damage, tied with the Hellion, the second highest HP and the lowest SPD. His low SPD makes him very easy to predict. He will usually go last on the hero side and gets outsped by most enemies. Being able to plan around that can be helpful in certain scenarios.

Trinketing[ | ]

A general rule of thumb is one ACC Trinket and one Trinket for whatever you want the Crusader to specialize in. The first Trinket is an obvious choice, if you want the Crusader to hit anything. Stunning Blows has fairly high ACC, but Smite, Zealous Accusation and Holy Lance want that extra ACC to consistently hit things. The second Trinket depends on playstyle and what the team needs. Paralyzer's Crest is a good choice for a more stun-focused Crusader, Commander's Orders is useful for a recovery-focused Crusader, Signed Conscription or later on Ancestor's Scroll help his recovery as well and Non-Euclidean Hilt helps with damage and stunning if you manage to get it. This slot can be filled with whatever playstyle you prefer or find fun.

Class Trinkets[ | ]

  • Defender's Seal - A pretty mediocre option early on. Having 5% Prot is nice, since it will always shave off 1 Point of damage from any attack. However this Trinket takes away all of the Crusader's crit, making him a lot weaker offensively. Protection Stone is usually just better since losing 1 SPD on the Crusader isn't that big a deal since he will usually go last anyways.
  • Knight's Crest - Gives some extra HP. Good while you have nothing else since it's all upside, but changing this for anything else later on is advised.
  • Swordsman's Crest - A really good offensive Trinket early on. If you don't run Battle Heal and only have Inspiring Cry, this is essentially free damage early on, since Inspiring Cry will be at 1 HP Healing anyways. Later on it becomes worse since the downside actually starts existing, even just with Inspiring Cry and it gets outclassed by most other offensive Trinkets.
  • Paralyzer's Crest - An amazing Trinket at any point in the run. Getting an extra 20% stun chance is amazing. The downside is nonexistent, since the Crusader doesn't need Dodge to keep himself alive. He has both Healing and really high HP.
  • Commander's Orders - If you plan on using Battle Heal as your main source of Healing on a team, bring this. It gives a big chunk of extra Healing for little downside.
  • Holy Orders - Probably his worst Trinket. The extra Virtue and -Stress don't do a lot, since the Crusader is very good at getting rid of his own Stress. Be it Camping skills or Inspiring Cry, those stats won't do a whole lot. Similarly, extra Deathblow resist isn't very good. Rolling the Deathblow dice is already a bad idea since it’s an unnecessary gamble, but it doesn't do anything besides 12% extra. Other stats can help either prevent you from hitting Deaths Door all-together or provide a lot more benefit at preventing Deathblows. Especially Bleed and Blight resist are very effective, since the most common Death to HP is DoT. Well Holy Orders takes those away. It makes you die harder due to extra Deathblow resist, but makes it very easy to die to DoT since you lack resists. All together it doesn't do a lot and just takes away some really important stats with DoT resists. Don't equip this.
  • Glittering Spaulders - A bunch of defensive stats for 2 SPD. The -Stress and Move resist don't matter a whole lot since the Crusader usually doesn't struggle with that. The extra Prot gives him a bit of extra chonk but is nothing to write home about. The -2SPD doesn't matter, since the Crusader will usually go last anyway. It can be used to manipulate SPD however. Use if you have nothing else to bring.
  • Signed Conscription - A good choice for any Crusader. Making both Inspiring Cry and Battle Heal more effective is always nice.
  • Non-Euclidean Hilt - Very expensive and a grind to get, very strong though. The upsides are all very good, giving him extra Stun chance, more HP, and a bit of extra damage. The downside of Random Target chance is usually not a big deal. Do note that random target still hits a valid target for the move you are using, for example stunning blow cannot randomly target backline.

Notable Neutral Trinkes[ | ]

  • Ancestor's Scroll - Essentially the better Signed Conscription. Not only does it give an extra 5%, it can also be swapped around at Camp to get even more Stress/HP Healing from other heroes' campskills.
  • Focus ring - A staple ACC Trinket. -Dodge doesn't matter on the Crusader, and this gives him a huge offensive boost.
  • Surgical gloves - If you heavily focus on Stunning Blows and Recovery, you don't usually need a huge chunk of ACC. Surgical Gloves gives you a bit of extra ACC and a huge chunk of Crit for little to no downside, making it a better pick than Focus Ring for this specific playstyle.

Other Synergy/Tips/Stuff that's nice to know[ | ]

  • Enemies that only have a few HP left are better to finish with Stunning Blow instead of Smite. It has higher ACC.
  • Having a Grave Robber start in Rank 4 and the Crusader in Rank 2 allows the Graverobber to Lunge on Turn 1, pushing the Crusader back to use Holy Lance, enabling Lunge on Turn 2 as well. This combo can usually take out any backline very quickly.
  • Zealous Vigil prevents Nighttime Ambush and heals 25 Stress when the Crusader is not afflicted and prevents Nighttime Ambush and heals 40 Stress when the Crusader is afflicted.
  • Zealous Speech essentially Encourage on 4 people and Pep Talk on 3, making this a Campskill that uses 5 Points to get 14 Points worth of value.
  • Due to his bonus against Unholy Enemies, he is more effective in the Ruins for dealing damage.
  • Both Inspiring Cry and Bulwark of Faith can be used to gain Torch, allowing the Crusader to counteract the -Torch from Hands from the Abyss on Occultist. It can also be used to save gold by not buying excess torches.

Equipment[ | ]

The Crusader wears heavy plate mail and wields a longsword. While affording him excellent protection and damage, his armor restricts movement, and his sword cannot be swung effectively in the back ranks.
~ Blacksmith

Unlike other games, equipment upgrades in Darkest Dungeon are linear, all bought at the Blacksmith.

Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Crusader has eight; 3 common, 2 Crimson Court, and 1 uncommon, rare, and very rare. In the base game, his lower level trinkets are crests (likely war decorations) and his high level trinkets are scrolls, likely what he uses in his Zealous Accusation attack. The Crimson Court DLC adds a pauldron and conscription letter, while the Color of Madness DLC adds a crystalline sword hilt.

The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket SetExclusive to The Shieldbreaker DLC, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.

Trivia[ | ]

  • The predetermined name of the Crusader is Reynauld, named after Raynald of Châtillon, a crusader who participated in the Second Crusade and died during The Battle of Hattin. The reason for Reynauld having the Kleptomaniac quirk is because Raynald was known to "always be in need of funds", resulting in the torture of Aimery of Limoges after the denial to fund his revenge against Manuel I Komnenos, since Komnenos refused to pay Raynald for his military services.
  • In early builds of the game, the name 'Lincoln' was used.
  • The Crusader has the most Backer Heroes with a staggering 64, with the runner up (the Man-At-Arms) only having half as many.
  • The design of the Crusader is based on the pop culture vision of the armors and weapons used by crusader knights during the Crusades (a series of wars sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church between the XI and the XV century against Muslims, pagans, and heretics). Since the time period covered is so large, a wide variety of of weapons and armour can be considered thematically appropriate; from early Medieval chain-based kit, emblematic of the First Crusade; to the full-body Milanese plate used for the later Reconquista, the crusades against the Hussites and the Ottomans.
  • A previous iteration of the Crusader during development featured an open-helmet chain mail design with the Crusader's face visible. This design has a wallpaper on Red Hook Studio's main website and it was shown off in the game's "Terror and Madness" trailer in 2013.
  • According to his Hopeless barks, the Crusader used to love somebody and was even married once. This was confirmed in his origin comic where he leaves his wife and child to embark on the crusade, but was changed so much by the war that he chose to remain on the crusade rather than return to his family.
  • Another one of his afflicted barks, this time while being Irrational, shows that he might have been mistreated by his father or a priest during childhood. The capitalization, "Father", implies the latter.
  • His Irrational bark, "Buff the pommel, boy! When it strikes, it must impress!" is possibly a reference to the meme "end him rightly" made popular by historical European martial arts YouTuber Skallagrim, whereby unscrewing one's pommel and throwing it is proclaimed to be a deadly and effective combat technique. However, it may also simply refer to striking with the pommel without removing it from the sword (as the Crusader does in-game).
  • While most characters have seven trinkets, the Crusader is one of four heroes to have eight (the others being the Highwayman, Plague Doctor, and Vestal).
