“ | Barbaric rage and unrelenting savagery make for a powerful ally. | „ |
~ The Ancestor |
The Hellion is one of the playable Character Classes in Darkest Dungeon.
Combat Skills[ | ]
“ | Wild, unpredictable, and utterly ruthless, the Hellion thrills to the spilling of blood! Her massive glaive affords her impressive reach in combat, while its razor sharp edge leaves lasting wounds on enemies. Versatile and unrelenting, she can hit the back row with her blade and devastate her foes. Certain skills leave her exhausted, however, and she may occasionally need to take a turn to recharge her adrenaline before entering the fray once again. | „ |
~ Guild |
Note: New Hellions will always come with the Wicked Hack skill.
"Exhaustion" debuffs (From Barbaric Yawp, Breakthrough, and Bleed Out) cannot be cleared by Medicinal Herbs, but can easily be made up by using Adrenaline Rush to recharge the Hellion’s stats.
(All buffs and debuffs last for 3 rounds unless otherwise specified.)

Camping Skills[ | ]
“ | At camp, the Hellion mutters blasphemies and sharpens her blade, eager to put it to use against the enemy hordes. Raucous and untamed, she is a study in contrasts - sitting stoically preparing for battle, or pealing with the unhinged laughter of the damned. | „ |
~ Survivalist |
Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.

Tactical Analysis[ | ]
The Hellion lives for battle, and this is reflected in her skill set and movement range. She's a frontliner who excels in position 1 and can never retreat to the back ranks on her own. She complements her great base DMG with a good HP base, above-average DODGE, and good SPD. Wicked Hack is your standard melee attack, and Iron Swan allows Hellion reach to target high-priority enemies in the back rank. If It Bleeds is her only way to strike position 3, and in exchange for bleed damage it does a little less raw damage.
The Hellion also has a few moves that exhaust her, imposing a DMG and SPD drawback. Barbaric YAWP! can stun the enemy frontlines, Breakthrough lets her advance from the back ranks while cleaving through a large group of enemies, and Bleed Out is her strongest move, doing great bleed damage on top of a very good DMG and CRT bonus. Bear in mind that the debuffs imposed on the Hellion make these moves not ideal in a prolonged fight or when used in succession, as medicinal herbs are unable to cleanse them.
Adrenaline Rush is a very good skill to take into a prolonged battle. It slightly heals the Hellion, cures Bleed and Blight on her, and provides a significant DMG and ACC buff. It is best used in the middle of a fight to cleanse those problematic damage Dots, but opening the fight with it can lead to amazing results.
Depending on what skills are equipped, the Hellion does not take kindly to being nudged out of position 1, and her low movement range means it might take a while to get her back to the front ranks. If rearranging the party, take care not to accidentally move in ways that push her back.
Equipment[ | ]
“ | Crude leather and furs may offer little protection, but the Hellion lives to bear the scars of battle proudly. Her priority is wreaking havoc with her massive glaive and bathing in the blood of her adversaries. | „ |
~ Blacksmith |
Unlike other games, equipment upgrades in Darkest Dungeon are linear, all bought at the Blacksmith.
Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Hellion has seven; 2 common, 2 Crimson Court and 1 uncommon, rare and very rare. In the base game, her lower level trinkets are pendants and her high level trinkets are hairpins. The Crimson Court DLC adds war paint and the clasp around her waist, while the Color of Madness adds a halberd blade that's been half-way melted off by some celestial substance

The Crimson Court DLC added special Trinket Sets, two for each hero. They confer powerful bonuses to the hero equipped with them, and having both equipped at once yields an additional bonus, which is shown greyed out at the bottom. The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket Set, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.
The Color of Madness DLC added trinkets with a new rarity, Crystalline. Each hero has their own unique crystalline trinket which can be bought from Jeweler inside the Nomad Wagon with Crystal Shards found within the Farmstead.

District Bonus[ | ]
The Crimson Court DLC adds Districts to the Hamlet, some of which confer passive benefits to heroes.
The gold cost of most Districts in Radiant mode is significantly reduced. The price in Radiant mode is shown in parentheses.

- Hear me, ancestors! Deliver me!
Enemy Missed Self[ | ]
- No... dammit, no! How can I be so weak?!
- Dark spirits have blessed this one!
Party Member Attack Misses[ | ]
- The elders never warned me of such... evils.
- How can any warrior — man or woman — face such horrors...?
Party Member Getting Hit[ | ]
- Why, spirits?! Why abandon us now, in the hour of our need?
- Please, ancestors… please grant me strength…
Party Member Missed by Enemy[ | ]
- How can you be so weak?! FIGHT!
- They have the bloodfury... They will destroy us!
Refusing to Move[ | ]

- (ignores you and stares with horror)
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- No... the spirits cannot hear me in this awful place.
- (heavy, panicked breathing)
- SHH! …Growling, near to us... some fell beast...
Becoming Paranoid[ | ]
- The spirits here are hungry. I feel their breath...
- My soul stands out like a flame. I am exposed...
- Secretly, they covet my strength. Soon, they will show it.
- Beasts stalk the edge. Can you smell their hate?
- They have the eyes of nervous tigers...
Stressing Party[ | ]
- I feel weak! Like as... like as I've been poisoned!
- They've caught our scent! More will join the pack!
- Someone sent them! One of your city-dwelling "allies!"
Switching Position to the Back[ | ]
- A foul wind encompasses them! They exude evil!
- Some dark spirit motivates them!
- Not all that walks this earth is OF this earth....
Passing Turn[ | ]
- No. Their mates will attack us from the rear.
- They are planning a trick! Must not lose focus!
- Keen predators remain wary, even of her pack-mates...
Random Action[ | ]
- A dark spirit is trying to control me! I deny it!
- Fortune favours the wary... Now I see why.
- The village elders warned me — deception is afoot...
Camping Stress[ | ]
- The spirits are offended by our trampings...
- I like not these city-folk's wandering eyes...
- The elders warned me of city-folk... Now I see why.
Attacking Party Member[ | ]
- Never trust city folk!
- The ancestral spirits have warned me of your kind...
Refusing to Retreat[ | ]
- What?! We're practically winning! Do you WANT us to lose?
- You were hoping all along that we'd fail... I foresaw this.
Getting Hit by Enemy[ | ]
- The elders sent them to test us. Surely, we are doomed.
- They are too powerful! Perhaps trained by our enemies!
Enemy Missed Self[ | ]
- One solid blow like that and I am off to see the ancestors!
- It has vengeance in its eyes! How have I wronged thee?!
Party Member Attack Misses[ | ]
- The spirits have cursed you. Your very presence is death.
- You are possessed by a spirit of misfortune!
Party Member Getting Hit[ | ]
- They smell our fear...
- They have hunted us! They know our weaknesses!
Party Member Missed by Enemy[ | ]
- Deceiver... You conspire with them! Deny it!
- I knew it! You city-folk cannot be trusted!
Refusing to Move[ | ]
- Oh no, you'll not escape this time. Hold your ground!
- I know no advantage to that. What are you hiding?!
Refusing to Use Item[ | ]
- …You doubt my vigor? I will show you!
- None of your city-folk distractions! Begone!
Refusing to Get Healed[ | ]
- Your touch sullies my warrior soul!
- No. I have ever been suspicious of these... arts.
- Your foreign ways are anathema to me!
Refusing to Get Buffed[ | ]
- Black majicks! You would poison my pure soul!
- It seems like power... but it is surely corruption!
- Ha! I may look a primitive, but I am no fool!
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- Too late! They are coming for us! ARM YOURSELF!
- Aye, and with my back turned, no less?
- You cannot hide the animal hunger in your eyes...
Refusing to be Target of Camping Skills[ | ]
- This is not a traditional blessing. I decline.
- The elders warned me against this sort of... boon.
Refusing to Eat while Camping[ | ]
- (draws weapon) You try to poison me? COWARD!
- I will gut myself before eating this. (draws weapon)
Becoming Masochistic[ | ]
- Nothing refreshes the spirit like one's own blood!
- These scars will prove my worth.
- Bloody me! I crave it! KAH-LEEEEEE-YAAAAAA!
- Carve away the fat 'til only a warrior remains!
- Let them ply their dark trade. My soul is invincible.
Stressing Party[ | ]
- To face death is to know life.
- Cut harder, cowards!
- If you spill my blood, you'll not doubt my resolve.
Switching Position to the Front[ | ]
- Place your mark upon my body. I wish to remember this.
- Honor me with a scar. Please... I beg you.
- Come! Illustrate my flesh with a tale of war!
Random Action[ | ]
- The blood already flows. Let it rage like a torrent!
- You think too much! Only blood begets blood!
- Tsk. Let me handle this... COME AND GET ME, FREAKS!
Camping Stress[ | ]
- Ehhh... There. One more scar to honor the elders.
- No more for me. Must save room for the fresh meat.
- Sleep? Only when my foes lie dead in a heap.
Marking Self[ | ]
- Here! Test my skills!
- If you seek blood, then blood you shall have!
Damaging Self[ | ]
- Heh, you see?... I LIKE to bleed!
- You cannot hurt me, you see? My will is unbreakable!
Refusing to Retreat[ | ]
- No! I've tasted death, and I want more!
- I've a victory tale for every scar. Why deny another?
Getting Hit by Enemy[ | ]
- (grinning snarl)
- Aye! Like two beasts in the dirt!
Enemy Missed Self[ | ]
- Weakness! Take my blood, or quit wasting my time!
- You dishonor me... Strike, or you can kill yourself!
Party Member Getting Hit[ | ]
- My turn! I long to bleed! To show my honor!
- Your pain is your gift. Now hurl it back at your foe!
Refusing to Move[ | ]
- I won't get nearly as many wounds there...
- I am here for the blood. I'll not move.
Refusing to Use Item[ | ]
- (smiles) You think me weak? Stand away, and watch.
- No. My people's mystics have trained me to endure pain.
Refusing to Get Healed[ | ]
- Stop... I may lose control of the blood rage...
- NO... Every wound and scar is a blessing!
- Heal me later. For now, the blood serves...
Refusing to Get Buffed[ | ]
- Let them cut me... Let them lay bare my warrior soul.
- I may bleed, yes. But my will is forged in steel.
- No. I will drown them in my flood.
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- Blood and bruises are trophies. Why prevent them?
- No. Our need is not so great. Not yet.
- Leave the spirits be. Besides... they reward pain.
Refusing to be Target of Camping Skills[ | ]
- Bah! Blood alone is the true measure of spirit!
- A true warrior bleeds and suffers and hurts — it is the way of things!
Refusing to Eat while Camping[ | ]
- Like the wolf, I hunt best when famished.
- Starvation is a predator's most encouraging ally.
Becoming Abusive[ | ]
- City-folk... War is for warriors!
- The civilized world is weak. Such a disappointment.
- Not one of you knows battle like my people...
- These others lack spirit. They will not survive...
- They won't spar with me because they fear pain. Fools.
Stressing Party[ | ]
- Cowards all! Run! Run to your den-mother's breast!
- Gah! Where are the foes worthy of my rage!?
- This is no challenge! I long for honorable battle!
Random Action[ | ]
- You do not know the ways of battle...
- Your soul stinks of fear. Feh!
- The spirits have denounced you!
Camping Stress[ | ]
- I'll be slain by these fools' snoring, if anything.
- Hear me, foes! Your foul stench shall be cleansed!
- Which one to eat first when the food runs out? Hmmm...
Attacking Party Member[ | ]
- None but beast should walk this land. I will cleanse it!
- Ab'rokhan dahry cho'lem, you stinking rat!
Party Member Attack Hits[ | ]
- ...If it were me, that would have been a killing blow.
- Yes, fine. Now step aside!
Party Member Attack Misses[ | ]
- Stand aside. Let a true warrior through.
- Dishonor! You must fight with your heart! OR FAIL!
Party Member Getting Hit[ | ]
- You should never have come with us anyway...
- War is not your profession, clearly...
Refusing to Move[ | ]
- Stop leaping about like a cubling! Hold fast, and focus!
- I am too busy for your "tactics." Fight, or die.
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- Coward! Fight on your own or not at all!
- You have blood? Then spill it as I do!
- Foolish city-folk... Do you not know guile is a sin?
Refusing to be Target of Camping Skills[ | ]
- Stop that! I do not need your meddlesome aid!
- HRRRAA! Touch me again... that I may drink your blood!
Becoming Selfish[ | ]
- They steal my kill again, I'll collect on the debt.
- Leave them to me! Leave them ALL to me!
- Glory is wasted on them! I claim my due!
- True, I am here for the glory. But a warrior must eat.
- Whosoever bleeds the most ought to benefit the most...
Stressing Party[ | ]
- I claim the good meat! Do not challenge me!
- Obviously, I deserve the lion's share...
- I have trained for battles of this sort! Stand aside!
Switching Position to the Front[ | ]
- Get behind me! This is warrior's work!
- I cannot SEE for all your flailing!
- I shall release this one... It is my due!
Switching Position to the Back[ | ]
- Take my place! I must sharpen my blade!
- I must conserve my strength!
- Bravery is one thing; recklessness, another.
Passing Turn[ | ]
- I will fight... but on my own terms.
- First promise me a sacrifice in honor of the spirits.
- The wind says to wait. And so I shall.
Random Action[ | ]
- The elders alone may guide me.
- Find a reward that suits my skill... Then we talk.
- My honor pleads otherwise.
Camping Stress[ | ]
- Let me go first next time. You move too slowly.
- If we're going to gamble, let's make it worth my time.
- I said that their teeth were mine. Hand them over.
Getting Hit by Enemy[ | ]
- Yes, more, MORE! The scars speak my honor!
- Must I do all the work myself?!
Party Member Attack Hits[ | ]
- I don't understand... I thought I was the best...
- Stop hogging all the glory!
Party Member Attack Misses[ | ]
- Stop fooling about! We are moving too slowly for my tastes!
- You're not working hard enough! Look to me for an example!
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- The spirits do nothing for those who spurn them.
- You must prove yourself first... As I have.
- Honor the spirits first. Then call on their aid.
Becoming Hopeless[ | ]
- Where flies the warhawk? It abandons my soul...
- My spirit longs for the open air I'll never breathe again.
- There is no honor in these lands... It pains me.
- The spirits all whisper of failure...
- No! Do not ponder death! That way lies defeat...
Stressing Party[ | ]
- They are powerful... more powerful than I'd feared.
- I have trained endlessly, and yet... so tired...
- They have no fear... and yet I... I...
Switching Position to the Front[ | ]
- If I cannot have victory, I must have death.
- Redeem me, creature. I have faltered.
- One last rush then... for the elder spirits.
Switching Position to the Back[ | ]
- I... I fear death... Forgive me, elder spirits.
- I shame the others with my weakness...
- There is no honor here... only a slow fade to nothing.
Passing Turn[ | ]
- No. Like the injured falcon, my eyes are hooded...
- No. I will not debase my ancestors further...
- The elder spirits listen not. It is pointless...
Random Action[ | ]
- Rage has failed me. I may as well beg for mercy.
- Tactics and plans and strategies... Spit on it!
- It was your "leadership" that got me into this mess...
Camping Stress[ | ]
- I need fresh meat... not this pathetic dried nonsense.
- I feel cold. The ancestors love not this place.
- The savanna calls to me, though its voice is weak.
Marking Self[ | ]
- My blood will salt this earth!
- Let us make a glorious end then, if nothing else.
Damaging Self[ | ]
- Perhaps there are worthier foes in the afterlife...
- The world does not deserve my anger...
Refusing to Retreat[ | ]
- Flight would only compound my failure...
- I am tempted... but I cannot. The ancestors are watching.
Refusing to Use Item[ | ]
- No. If the spirits will my death, so be it.
- (pushes you away) The ancestors call to me. I must go.
Refusing to Get Healed[ | ]
- To defy death is deny myself...
- The elders summon me. I'll not disappoint them again.
- My soul is dead... None have the right to revive it.
Refusing to Get Buffed[ | ]
- Stop your flailing. The ancestors have forsaken us.
- No! We have but one chance... FIIIGHT!
- If you pity me, then end my pain... do not prolong it.
Refusing to Perform Camping Skills[ | ]
- I'd rather lop my hand off than dishonor you with it.
- You deserve better than my primitive offerings.
- Surely your modern ways must exceed my own.
Refusing to be Target of Camping Skills[ | ]
- The dirt has whispered my name. Do not waste your time.
- Why? The wild spirits have forsaken me. I am done.
Refusing to Eat while Camping[ | ]
- My appetite seems as weak as my swing...
- What I would not give for meat from the bone...
Becoming Irrational[ | ]
- Yessss... the blood bubbles at my lips! YYAAAAAASSS!
- I am not whole until I am cut apart. DO IT!
- I soar like the warhawk. High above the clouds...
- Someone armwrestle me! ...COME ON, YOU COWARDS!
- The wilding beasts go unclothed — so shall I!!
Stressing Party[ | ]
- KREEEE-YAAAAA! Your heads on a pike! ALL OF YOU!
- BURN THEIR HUTS! EAT THEIR YOUNG! GRRRRAAAAAAA!
- Throw them over the walls! Let them eat their dead!
Switching Position[ | ]
- RAAAAAAAAAA!
- BLOOOOOD! GIVE ME BLOOOOOOOOOD!
- KREEEE-YAAAAAA!
Passing Turn[ | ]
- I cannot... my spirit animal flies too high...
- Clouds and fields... The curvature of the earth....
- Herds flee and flocks scatter. The predator has come.
Random Action[ | ]
- Breathe deep... the mass-grave burns beneath...
- The elders speak through me... They say... LAMENT!
- I see the mountains... the fields, the dunes...
Camping Stress[ | ]
- (growling, howling, snarling)
- You have good legs. Lovely MEATY legs... (licks lips)
- The sun rises! ... KAI-REEE, KAI-REEE, KAI-ROOOOOOOO!
Marking Self[ | ]
- The spirits... They cry of... of PAIN AND HORRORS!
- The ancestors call for blood! YOUR BLOOD!
Attacking Party Member[ | ]
- (bizarre growling and hissing)
- KAI-EEEEEEEE!
Damaging Self[ | ]
- (wild hissing)
- KAI-REEEEEEE!
Refusing to Retreat[ | ]
- (insane growling)
- NO! I have marked them with my blood!
Getting Hit by Enemy[ | ]
- (roars like a lion)
- (laughs like a hyena)

Party Member Attack Hits[ | ]

Party Member Attack Misses[ | ]

- OOOOWOOOOOOOOOOOO! OOOOWOOOO-WOOO-WOOOOOOOO!
Party Member Getting Hit[ | ]
- (low whimpering)
- They come for us... for our sweet, sweet flesh...
Party Member Missed by Enemy[ | ]
