Tortured and reclusive... This man is more dangerous than he seems...
~ The Ancestor

The Abomination is one of the playable Character Classes in Darkest Dungeon.

Combat Skills[ | ]

Beaten, branded and imprisoned for untold decades, this furtive vagrant hides a terrible secret. The Eldritch poison coursing through his veins has given him unspeakable power, at a terrible cost. As his form changes, so too does his role in combat!
~ Guild

The Abomination has two different sets of abilities, which changes whenever he switches form using Transform. Transforming into Beast form does not count as an action, allowing the Abomination to use Transform and another skill on the same turn. Upon transforming back into Human form, Transform cannot be used again for the duration of the battle. If the Abomination is in Beast form when a battle ends, he automatically transforms back to Human form. Additionally, he will return to Human form if he suffers an Affliction while in Beast form.

The Abomination will suffer 6 Stress for every turn he is in Beast form, not counting the turn he transforms.

(All buffs and debuffs last for 3 rounds unless otherwise specified.)

* Transform can be used twice in total, once to transform into Beast form and a second to transform back to the Human form.

Camping Skills[ | ]

The Abomination spends his restful moments lost in the myriad symptoms of his condition. Pulse-pounding self-buffs provide opportunities for even greater effectiveness in the next melee, while concentrating on suppressing his terrible impulses can alleviate some of the party's apprehension.
~ Survivalist

Camping skills are special skills heroes can use while they are camping. They take a certain number of "respite" points to use, and can only be used once per camp (unless the skill says otherwise). Most heroes have three shared camping skills and all heroes have 4 unique camping skills (with the Flagellant being the exception, having only unique camping skills). Only 4 of these can be equipped at one time. Any Buffs or lasting effects given from a camping skill lasts for 4 battles.

Most of the Abomination's camping skills grant him powerful buffs, but generally at the cost of extra stress for himself and/or his team, only his self speed buff doesn’t follow this rule. He also has a companion stress heal ability similar to the Jester’s Mockery.

Tactical Analysis[ | ]

The Abomination is a highly unique class, with a different set of abilities for each of his two forms. Thus, he always has his entire kit at his disposal, and upgrading the skill set of an Abomination as he levels up will be more costly than with most other heroes.

As a human, the Abomination has two attacks that restrict him to positions 2 and 3 — Manacles makes for a good stun ability on anything between positions 1 to 3, while Beast's Bile is a good area-of-effect Blight skill. These attacks don't hit very hard, but allow the Abomination to function as a midline ranged-support character. Absolution is a self-healing skill, though it is more for relieving Stress than physical self-heal. This factors into his main ability, Transform, and all its associated burdens.

Transform causes the Abomination to unleash his inner monstrosity, healing the Abomination and supplying him with a boost to his DMG, SPD, and Blight resistance so long as he remains transformed. He exchanges his utility skills for raw damage output, but the transformation itself is stressful to both him and his companions. Transforming induces a +8 Stress penalty to everyone else, and for each subsequent turn he remains transformed, the Abomination himself takes 6 Stress. Transforming does not consume the Abomination's turn, leaving him free to select an attack on that very same turn.

The main two skills the transformed Abomination uses is Rake and Rage. Rage offers consistent single-target damage with a good range and CRIT chance, while Rake starts out weak but ramps up in damage for each use. Slam should see occasional use due to it having unusual movement features for both the Abomination and its target, and is likely used to help nudge the Abomination out of position 3.

If the going gets tough, a transformed Abomination can revert to his human self. This causes minor Stress relief in his companions and grants him access to Absolution for his own Stress relief, but saddles him with a SPD debuff. The Abomination can only transform once per battle, back and forth each, and so players are inclined to use the Transformation only in emergencies — when the Abomination is in dire need of healing or they need a surge of damage immediately. At the end of each battle, a transformed Abomination will automatically revert, with the associated Stress relief to the party.

When using an Abomination, the Restraining Padlock trinket is incredibly important, as it provides a substantial reduction in transform-induced Stress, allowing the player to use it with less penalty. The Steady quirk also reduces the Stress he takes from all sources, including transformation Stress, letting the Abomination fight safely for longer periods of time. Those who prefer to use his human form's skills would find value in the Padlock of Transference, which offers a substantial Stun and Blight bonus.

If the Abomination gets an Affliction while transformed, he will automatically transform back and can't transform again for the rest of the battle, so keep a close eye on his Stress levels to avoid getting caught in a difficult situation. You can either use the Hero's Ring to raise his Virtue Chance and avoid a mid-battle Affliction, or pair him up with a Stress healer like the Jester to keep his Stress levels under control.

Equipment[ | ]

Protected by cursed chains and a thick, leathery hide, the Abomination can withstand the pressures of frontline combat as well as any plated footman. His terrible claws are each the size of daggers, and his progressive mutation manifests in unspeakable strength, speed, and a profusion of bile.
~ Blacksmith

Unlike other games, equipment upgrades in Darkest Dungeon are linear, all bought at the Blacksmith.

Each Hero has Trinkets unique to them that only they can equip. The Abomination has seven; 2 uncommon, 2 Crimson Court and 1 common, rare, and very rare. In the base game, his trinkets are all padlocks. The Crimson Court DLC adds a cloak and chain, while the Colors of Madness DLC adds a broken key.

The Crimson Court DLC added special Trinket Sets, two for each hero. They confer powerful bonuses to the hero equipped with them, and having both equipped at once yields an additional bonus, which is shown greyed out at the bottom. The origin dungeon for all Trinket Sets is the Courtyard and they all have the rarity Crimson Court. The Shieldbreaker Trinket SetExclusive to The Shieldbreaker DLC, however, is only obtainable through her final 6th and 7th nightmare encounters and won't be dropped or given as a reward in the Courtyard. Trinkets you already have will stop dropping, so there's value in not selling the ones you don't like until you get the ones you want.

~ Abomination on being executed by the Heart of Darkness.

    Trivia[ | ]

    • The predetermined name of the Abomination is Bigby, likely a reference to the character Bigby Wolf, a werewolf from the comic series Fables and the popular game based on it, The Wolf Among Us.
    • The Abomination hero class was designed by Josh Lauer, a Lord-Tier Kickstarter backer. [1]
      • The idea for the Abomination came from werewolves, which Josh Lauer is a fan of.
    • The name of the Abomination's highest level armor, Inhuman Bondage, is also the name of the patch that he was added in.
    • Based on some of his barks, before his mutation, the Abomination spent time as a scientist and in a monastery.
    • If the Abomination transforms into his Beast form, then returns to Human form, and the player exits to menu or the game and returns, the transformation can be used again.
    • In prior versions of the game, the Abomination could not be in the same party as religious characters (Crusader, Vestal, Leper, Flagellant). This behaviour has been revoked since The Color of Madness update.
    • The Abomination is the only class to have two Virtuous sprites, one each for his Beast and Human forms.
    • The concept of the Abomination being cursed by an eldritch poison in his veins that cause him to transform into a beastly monster is similar to that of the video game Bloodborne, where a city's population is similarly cursed to turn into beasts after using blood from eldritch deities.
    • The Abominations camping skill 'The Quickening', as well as the bark that accompanies it, is a reference to the 1986 film 'Highlander'.
Spoilers Contains spoilers for the Darkest Dungeon
    • If the party is teleported out of combat by a White Cell Stalk while an Abomination is in beast form, he will not revert to human form. Beast form has no walking animation and the Abomination does not incur stress in beast form when out of combat. Camping does not change the Abomination's form, but his camping sprite will always depict him in human form.
