Path at Crossroads

Heroes, or Adventurers, in Darkest Dungeon II are characters used by the player when assembling their party for the journey to The Mountain. They are divided into several classes, specializations that define their appearance and abilities. Each character has different skills and can fill different roles in combat. Each class also has unique barks as a reaction to many situations. Darkest Dungeon II currently has 13 controllable heroes, but more are planned for future updates. The Bounty Hunter is also an available hero, but is only hirable via The Inn for one Region, at the cost of Candles of Hope.

At the beginning of each run, the player chooses four of their unlocked heroes to begin the run with at The Crossroads. The player's party is limited to four Heroes. At first, only four Hero classes are available to choose from, but as the player progresses through the game, they will earn Candles of Hope, which will in-turn let them unlock additional Heroes from the Altar of Hope. In the event that a player loses one or more heroes, but reaches an Inn, a randomly selected hero will join the party as a replacement. Heroes that replace a fallen member will have the same quirks from when they generated at The Crossroads. If there are no Heroes available due to them not being unlocked at the Altar, no new Hero will appear as a replacement.

Stats[ | ]

Each character has a number of different stats, normally determined by their class and their equipment. Stats are also influenced by quirks and diseases, either positively or negatively, and it is possible to acquire temporary effects influencing a hero's stats as a side effect of a relationship. Stats can also be given temporary buffs through the use of certain Inn Items or Combat Items. In-combat buffs and debuffs do not directly affect the hero's stats, simply adding an additional layer of calculation to attacks/skills. Stats are also used by monsters.

Resistances[ | ]

Resistances are a Hero's or Enemy's ability to withstand certain status effects when they are applied to them (Such as Bleed or Blight). Every hero and enemy has a different set of base stats for these resistances. These resistances can be altered by region modifiers, debuffs/buffs, items, and more.

Speed[ | ]

Icon speed Speed affects the order in which Heroes and Enemies act in combat. Every round, a round speed value is computed by adding each combatant's Icon speed speed to a random number from 1 to 6. This is the value that determines the turn order for that round — the faster the round speed, the earlier the combatant will get to act.

Death[ | ]

When Heroes reach 0 Icon HP dd2 HP, they are placed onto Deathsdoor dd2 Death's Door. Every time they take damage while on Death's Door, a Hero has a chance to die and be replaced by a Corpse. Death in Darkest Dungeon II is permanent for the duration of the current Expedition.

Each Hero has a Death's Door resistance stat. This stat can be modified by certain events, Quirks, Combat Items, and Inn Items. Additionally, surviving a hit on Death's Door reduces Death's Door resistance, making repeated attacks more likely to kill the hero.

Diseases[ | ]

Disease dd2 Diseases are modifiers to a Hero that are obtained from enemies and other interaction during an Expedition.

Tokens[ | ]

Darkest Dungeon II uses a token system for helping the player strategize during combat. Info on every Token can be found here.

Hero Goals[ | ]

Each new expedition, Heroes will generate specific goals, such as landing killing blows on certain enemies, visiting specific locations, triggering encounters, or using items. Completing a Hero's goals will award additional Candles of Hope.

Relationships[ | ]

Through the course of an Expedition, your roster of Heroes will come to develop Relationships. These can greatly affect your run with powerful blessings or curses and cause your heroes to act out in interesting ways. There are many items and ways to manipulate your heroes' relationships.

Stress[ | ]

As your Heroes traverse the horrifying and difficult landscape during your Expedition, they will accumulate Stress. High stress can cause Heroes to act out in negative ways and cause strife amongst your team. There are many abilities and items that can help with stress mitigation.

Skills and Abilities[ | ]

Skill Unlocks[ | ]

Heroes all start with 5 base Abilities or Skills. To unlock all 11, you must do so at The Shrine of Reflection. The Shrine takes the player into the backstory of the chosen Hero through a series of specialized combat scenes and narrative cutscenes. These can be found in detail on each Heroes specific page. This excludes the Bounty Hunter, whos skills are unlocked at the Altar of Hope.

Every Hero (excluding the Bounty Hunter) can upgrade their abilities one time at the Mastery Trainer. The Bounty Hunter comes with all skills mastered.
